a comic by Robert Botn

Robert Botn

I have always had a love for wordplay, puns, parody and satire. I am also a huge pop culture nerd, with an emphasis on 80s and 90s movies and comics. In my opinion, life is a much too serious business to be taken too seriously.

The comic strip PERKY POLAROIDS is inspired by the works of Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, Terry Pratchett, Dan Piraro and David Shrigley - among others.

A long time ago, in a country far, far away … I tried to write and draw my first comic. I was 13 at the time, and the result was - well, crap.

Severeal years later, I tried again. This time the result was a bit less crappy. But crap, all the same.

In the years that followed, I wrote tons of scripts for fantasy- and scifi novels. Most of these scripts were never finished, and only one got published. Which was fun. Offcourse. But writing novels takes an awfully long time - sometimes years. Phew …

Being the restless soul that I am, writing novels was, to be honest, nothing short of torture. I probably liked the idea of being a writer more than I actually enjoyed writing. My love for science fiction, fantasy and comics, and more importantly - puns, wordplay and jokes - never really left me, though.

In december of 2023, I was doing a 100 day sketching challenge, when an idea fell into my head, and I drew “Batnanaman”. My kids loved the joke, and I proceeded to drawing “The Invisible Hulk” and “Midlife Moody Tech Support Tortoises”, and the ball just kept rolling. I bought a Calvin & Hobbes Comic book (which I for some mysterious reason I didn´t read when I was younger), which led to me seeing a documentary on Bill Watterson - which led to … manic, obsessive drawing, and 24/7 notewriting on my phone.

I was hooked …

The ideas just kept coming, and coming, and coming, and … well, you get the deal.

The result is a single-panel comic, that aims at being just cheeky enough to be considered `A big bowl of good laughs, with a side order of wacky takes on the human condition´.

In PERKY POLAROIDS I get to play around with themes and characters I love, I get to cook up goofy wordplays, write short stories, sketch and draw - and at the same time say something significant about the human condition.

What could possibly be better?
